Cover vs. Original

Black Magic Woman

So honestly have you known that? Yes, Black Magic Woman by Santana is only a cover version. The original song was written two years before by Fleetwood Mac.
However, Black Magic Woman became really famous in the version by Santana. And it is one of the hits from the wonderful and perhaps best Santana album Abraxas. But you should also listen to the original by Fleetwood Mac, it is a great song, too.

Santana's version is of course more commercial, and lively, possibly even more tuneful too... But for sheer soulful & understated guitar playing with feeling, Peter Green's original gets my vote!

Santana's version of Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen (with vocals by Greg Rolie) is one of the few songs I could listen to every day for the rest of my life and never get sick of it. Gypsy Queen is originally by Gabor Szabo.

Abraxas is indeed the best Santana ever produced. The whole record makes me shiver. Sorry for Fleetwood Mac. However, I love e.g. their Albatros, Sara, Little Lies... No hard feelings?

Fleetwood Mac are amazing! Santana are also amazing but there such different genres and so awesome in their own ways I find it hard to compare the two. Santanas but just barely. And yes i did already know this is a cover

They are both great. If you get a chance, listen to Mac's version Live at the Boston Tea Party! Clearly Santana made it his own just like Hendrix took Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower" to another level (although that was a HUGE difference), but there would be nothing for Carlos to build on without Peter. Listen to Peter's "Supernatural" when he was with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and tell me where Carlos got his trademark sustain from? (not to mention an album title). Come on, they are both legends.

santana owns fleetwood mac, they are one of the gayest bands ever don't care if fleetwood mac wrote it first, santana is the one that made the song carlos would own peter any day

Peter Green gets my vote...If Peter Green had not written the song, santana would be cleaning toilets today...
As B.B King once said in his own words : "Sorry,Peter Green Is Best..."
I simply cannot compare the musicality of Peter Green with that of santana. There's no way that santana's version could surpass that of Peter Green's,I mean there are those exquisite solos from Green god that santana couldn't even dream of...
Peter Green,always gets my vote.
- Teo, London, England, 24.07.2007
Listen to Santana's version on Moonflower from 1977 and then reconsider your vote! Santana whips butt!
- Dino, Cape Town, South Africa, 20.06.2007
Both versions are fantastic; however, the original by Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac gets my vote.
- Bill, Memphis, United States, 21.05.2007
Peter Green was at the peak of his guitar majesty in his "original" Fleetwood Mac when he wrote & delivered the essential version of this song, a bluesy, south-of-the-border seduction of raw sensuality. Carlos only wishes he had those kind of chops. No wonder B.B. King famously said, from the stage in London, to a packed crowd of Brits, including Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck & Jimmy Page: "Peter Green's the best!"
