Cover vs. Original

Knockin' on Heaven's Door

In this case the decision is quite difficult for me. On the one hand so many bands covered this great song, but Guns 'n' Roses created the best cover version. On the other hand the original version by Bob Dylan fits in my opinion better to this song.
So finally my winner here is Bob Dylan.

Guns 'n' Roses

Bob Dylan. No contest. GNR did amazing with this song but Bob just was divine.

GNR doing a slow song. There are few worse efforts at music in history...

True this is a very good cover by the GNRs, but you just cant go past bobby D's original, especially when you hear it in the movie pat garret and billy the kid

The best cover version of this song is by Television on their album THE BLOW UP. And Dylan's original version is wonderful, if short. But G&R - maybe the most over-rated garbage band ever - turn in a typically miserable performance.

GnR did a really great job on this. Best cover of the song ever and that is saying something because this might be the most covered song in rock.
Nevertheless, Dylan wins by a mile. The original is a haunting masterpiece, made all the more so by the way it so quickly cuts off and leaves you wanting more. Listen to it with headphones and no distractions. Unlike the GnR version, this is not a song to listen to while you drive, surf the net etc.

Although Dylan is a guitar legend, I must say that Guns 'N Roses did an excellent job on this one. Axl sounds great, Slash sounds even better, and it has more raw energy; pretty much like every other priceless GNR headbanging creation.

Both Dylan's original and all of his own covers - including especially the Dylan/Band live version from "Before the Flood" - are way superior.
