Cover vs. Original

Smooth Criminal

Thanks for this proposal, Tom. I have to admit, when I first read the name of the song, I didn't know which song it is. But then I started listening to it and I recognized it of course. But that the version by Alien Ant Farm is only a cover version and that Michael Jackson wrote the original, I haven't known so far. But you live and learn.
However, I like this song. But I'm not a big fan of Michael Jackson. So my vote goes to Alien Ant Farm.

Micheal Jackson's version was more than 100,000,000,000 times better, so the rest of you all suck balls, if you don't like him!

A good example of how hard it is to completly ruin a great song, AAF is doing their best. I think that a cover should bring some new strokes of genius to the tune it's covering (this one does not) or take care of the things that made the original good but in that case it don't belong on a record.

AAF is horrible, and just because they decided to cover a good song, doesn't make them smart.
Michael, on the other hand, is a horrible human being...... but an excellent singer.
Don't vote for who molested the least amount of kids. Vote for who actually made a version of this song that doesn't make you puke.

>>'m not sure I comprehend how anyone could give more credit to a punk kid with a distorion pedal than the genius that conceived the concepts in this song.

Dude you got it all wrong. The idea of a rock band covering this great song just seems so far fetched and they pulled it off with respect to the original recording with the singer even doing the trademark mj screams. Total props to AAF.

Michael has a was of making music seem deeper. The original version isn't restless, and gives me the chills when listened through reference monitors. I'm not sure I comprehend how anyone could give more credit to a punk kid with a distorion pedal than the genius that conceived the concepts in this song.

I disagree. . .AAF was already big on rock radio by the time they released this song. "Movies" had been in heavy rotation for a while before "Smooth Criminal" was released. It's a really hard choice to choose between the two songs, but I'm gonna have to go with the AAF version just because it feels more rockin and upbeat. The original is lacking some character, and the cover fills that in.
