Cover vs. Original

Smooth Criminal

Thanks for this proposal, Tom. I have to admit, when I first read the name of the song, I didn't know which song it is. But then I started listening to it and I recognized it of course. But that the version by Alien Ant Farm is only a cover version and that Michael Jackson wrote the original, I haven't known so far. But you live and learn.
However, I like this song. But I'm not a big fan of Michael Jackson. So my vote goes to Alien Ant Farm.

as.. honestly.. how many people even like michael jackson after the whole going on trial for well.. u kno.. and even tho proven not guilty... its hard to recover your reputation after something like that.. but then people that grew up listening to michael jackson.. are most likely to pick his version... because.. they grew up with it.. so.. yea.

I believe that even though the "statistics" say that AAF's song is better, the original of all songs is always better. and "statistics" only work truly if everybody votes. it could be that only a small bit of people voted and that's the conclusion. so SUCK OFF!

Being a musician for 20 years, I can understand that some groups do covers for many reasons. Usually, it is either the challenge, or a liking of the song done by the original artist(s).... like a tribute. I do, however, find it amazing that some of the covers are even included on the album/CD. At some point the group has to listen to the final mix and make a decision. Guns and Roses' version of "Knocking on Heavens Door " comes to mind, and now this one. It would appear that the group doing the cover should have said.... "naw... this really sucks", and be honest. Obviously not done in either case mentioned above. I'd give AAF a "C" for the effort (G&R gets an "E Minus")but neither should have been released. The fact that it was causes me to not want to listen to any of their other stuff.

As far as the ratings go, I think the one done by AAF is better than MJ, but as far as the music video goes, both are kinda lacking. AAF's video spoof of MJ is funny as hell, but has no storyline to it. As far as MJ's vid goes, I guess you have to be from that era to understand it. Either way, Smooth Criminal rocks!

I like Alien Ant Farm's version better but you can't not respect the original Micheal Jackson created it. But Alien Ant Farm's version is more the style i like.

Some of micheal Jacksons other songs are great.

Even if he touched children, MJ is the lesser of two evils here. That's how awful AAF is.

I think that MJ's original is much more atmospheric and dramatic. It was one of his best songs in my opinion. I love the AAF cover. It is heavy and raw. I vote that the original is better however. Bands usually do covers because they think the songs are great as well, so I'll bet that AAF would agree
