Cover vs. Original

You really got me

This time I have to admit that until quite recently I myself haven't known that 'You really got me' was not published by Van Halen as an original. Already in the sixties The Kinks produced this song. And also at that time it was anything else than a bad song and topped the UK-Charts.
Neverthelless I like Van Halens cover version better. They brought even more dynamic into this great song. So my vote goes to Van Halen.

Van Halen is 100 times better. Kinks is a simple pop song. Van Halens is epic. End of story.

why do people always have to think older = better, or original version = better version ?
There is just no doubt that in this case, VH's cover is so much better, any objective mind should agree with that.

What are you people smoking. I listened to van halens cover and felt my ears bleed. It was horrific..absolute trash and its a shame these braindead americans think its a van halen original.

I remember growing up I used to hear the Kinks version on the radio all the time. Now you only hear the Van Halen version and I have to admit I do like the Van Halen version better. Still, at least the Kinks still have the best Christmas song of all time :-)

No contest at all.

Breagan, do us all a favour and eat your own head you won't need it - your arse certainly does more talking than your mouth, pal...

I listened to the Kinks and felt it didn't have as much energy. A lot of people will always vote for the originals because they feel original is always the best (I often do this), but there are times when covers are better, and this is one of those times. Sort of like how Smoke on the Water on the Made In Japan album sounds better than its studio counterpart, whereas studio songs usually sound better.

So my vote is the Van Halen cover.

The Kinks fan page you post lists *178* cover versions of YRGM. A hundred and seventy eight different recordings! "Mediocrity knows nothing above itself, but talent instantly recognizes genius."

Oh, joy: Another internet "who's the world's greatest guitarist/drummer/accordion player" argument.

Anyone instigating these kinds of "my fave is better than your fave" arguments must truly be a complete and utter moron.

There *is* no such thing as "the best guitarist". When you get to the level of an Eddie Van Halen, or Clapton, or whomever, there are only varying degrees of excellence among a group of titans.
