Cover vs. Original

Dead Souls

This is a tough one.
I personally adore the original for its very innovative guitar and Ian Curtis' inimicable voice. Plus. NIN couldn't exist without Joy Division's seminal influence.
On the other hand, this song's alternating rhythmic and crashing guitar parts seems made to be covered by NIN's frenetic sound.

NIN FUCKING OWNS THIS SONG.

NIN's version is so much better than Joy Division's it is silly. Whoever disagrees is sadly mistaken. You need to go to the doctor and get the caked shit officially cleaned out of your ears.

Ian's voice sounds so lame compared to Trent Reznor's. I'm not a big NIN fan. I never was and never will be. I know quality when I hear it.

Much prefer the Nails version. Trent Reznor's vocals are superior IMO and musically it's richer.

Not even a close contest here, The original is just so much better, real emotion.

Joy Divisions version has much more feeling and depth to it. Saying that though NIN have done a brilliant cover, not only that seeing as the graphic novel had tribute dedicated to Ian Curtis, and chapters named after Joy Division songs, a perfect choice for Trent to choose to do for the soundtrack.

I think the original sounds like a bad lounge singer, but then I've never been a fan of that tinny seventies sound.

I just now found out it was a cover! It is still playing on XM as I type. I recognized the beginning riff but it was different. "The Crow" was an awesome CD! The original is okay...

I didn't actually realise that this was Joy Division's song, originally, until about and hour ago, and I like the original better...that may be because I prefer Joy Division to NIN...but as far as covers go, Trent Reznor was made to cover this song!
