Cover vs. Original

A Whiter Shade of Pale

The original is an awesome song but Zakk's lone piano and haunting vocals leave me in awe. This from Ozzy Osbourne's lead guitar player. I have to go with BLS on this one.

Can't match the original, except when Robin Tower joins in live (if you consider that a cover).

As much as I like Zakk and BLS, their cover of Whiter Shade of Pale just isn't all that good. The best cover of the song - and better than the original - is, without a doubt, the version by HSAS (Hagar, Schoen, Aaronson, Shrieve).

I like the cover version, a lot! But I was expecting a much harder version from a Shredder / Heavy Metal band like Black Label Society.

That said.

I think Zakk Wylde is a little too Axl Rose-ish on this one. And seemingly, almost bordering on, trying to be a little too Leon Russell-esque.

I am most definitely going with the full instrumentations of the original and Gary Brooker on vocals.

One of those deals where the cover is actually pretty good, but the original is so mind-blowing that it really is no contest.

What a waste of time, effort and creativity to record a version of this classic!
