Cover vs. Original

Cyprus Avenue

A cover by the original performer? It may seem odd in this age of reproducing albums almost exactly but in the old days, music used to be reworked for different settings. Never is this clearer than with the differences between "Cyprus Avenue", a key track on Van Morrison's second debut, "Astral Weeks" and its radical re-arrangement for 1974's "It's Too Late To Stop Now". The subdued simplicity of the arrangement was tossed out the window, with the result a legendary high-octane performance to end all performances.

It's a toss-up, but in my eyes, the "Astral Weeks" arrangement wins out in the end.
