Cover vs. Original

Viva Las Vegas

The Dead Kennedys didn't do a lot of covers, but when they did do them they made great parodies of the originals. "Viva Las Vegas", a staple of their live shows, is no different.

I have listened to several Dead Kennedys songs and they all suck. Their lead singer's vocals are horrid. He sounds like that dude who used to sing, "Love Shack," with the B-52s, I believe. Annoying and very gay. Comparing him to Elvis is a joke, just like the Dead Kennedys are.

Elvis did the original version of this song written for him by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, two legendary song-writers from the Brill Building era who wrote many of rock's greatest hits.

Elvis by a mile!

viva las vegas is not an elvis original, however his one is the most famous version. i prefer the kennedys version though, jello biafra is a way better singer than elvis, + the punk style of the cover gives it more life.

Ha!!! It says that right now the vote is split exactly 50%-50%!

Well, I'm gonna tilt things over to the DK's because they're version has a whole layer of drama and meaning and overall menace that The King simply didn't have any use for on this particular tune. The Dead Kennedy's version is like an antidote to a creepy brand of socio-political toxic sludge, yet it's hilarious at the same time.

I bet Jello Biafra couldn't have made it with Anne Margaret (mmm, yummy) in a million years though...

(Oh and I'll take Elvis over Nick Cave on "In the Ghetto" any day of the week.)
