Cover vs. Original

The Guns of Brixton

The Toten Hosen gave a new style to this song with their interpretation. It's sounds much more modern.

Die Toten Hosen did a great job, but Paul Simonon makes it sound much more sincere and therefore, better.

I definitely have to go with Die Toten Hosen on this one. Don't get me wrong, I'm a long-time fan of The Clash, but.. the song's just got something in it that The Clash's version doesn't. It's hard to explain, it's like there's just one small minuscule thing that just makes a massive difference. Can't explain it more clearly, so.

punk bands can do covers but other bands can't cover punk, i thought that was an unspoken rule

Imho the new version does not sound more modern. One would say it's a 60s folk song...quite boring actually! It misses all the power of the original...and it also misses one of the best basslines ever! The beginning of the song without that typical bassline, just sounds like Opus' "Live is live". The new isntrument is an accordion, as you can see here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DOxu8xeBd0

you can't cover the guns of brixton!
Clash song are not just music, they always have great lyrics. and toten hosen don't own those lyrics..they're all a completely different way of living

i prefer the original. i mean, that unplugged version is really not bad.... but i just love the power of the original, it's very present bass line, just a perfect song for me.
what's that additional instrument in the hosen's version? an organ?
