Could It Be Magic
Under the melodrama of disco, the formerly ridiculous Barry Manilow song based on a Chopin melody becomes a masterpiece of excess, one of Donna's first shining moments on the dance floor.

Comments about Could It Be Magic:
Donna's "cover" version was so confident and so good, that Barry decided to use her (and Moroder/Bellotte's) arrangement for his own extended dance mix of the song in the late '90s. The ultimate homage when the writer changes his own style based on the success of am artist's cover? I think so.

Although Barry is a great songwriter, Donna makes this song absolutely shine. I truly doubt if many people would remember it, if not for Donna's cover

Wow guys you have all gotten off track!! The questions was not about how is better Donna or Barry... it was how had the better version of Could it be Magic? I think both are good and it depends on your mood. If you just came home after a long day and wanted to unwind with a glass of wine maybe Barry's version might hit the spot ..But if you want hear the hear a song by a great song writer stepped up a few notches then no one and I mean no one can do that better than Donna!!! Lets fast foward to 1978.. McArthurs Park..I am sure to this day people think that Donna was the original artist that sang it..yes she is that good!!! Yes I am a fan of Barry but none of his music is on my IPOD>.but it's packed with Donna!! the only way to work out!!! Peace

Barry writes nice songs, while Donna is by far the better singer. With Donna Could It Be Magic became to a masterpiece. Actually I hate comparing, but in this case, no doubt: DONNA SUMMERs version is outstanding. Only she gave the real MAGIC to the song.

The question is about these two songs - it was not a question of Donna's career vs. Barry's career. The two of them remain close friends today and each artist if busy trying to satisfy their own audience and sometimes those audiences meet - like at Elton John's benefit a few years back. Both Donna and Barry have made music history and are classics!

Any true Barry fan should know Donna is still alive and kicking (both stars appear on Dave Koz's latest CD - and they shine). Having said that, Barry is an extremely gifted singer-songwriter while Donna has a fantastic, unmatchable voice... She hasn't hit the charts in a long time? So what? When it comes to quality and talent charts mean NOTHING.

I didn't even know (at the time) that it was a song by Barry M; It was a Donna Summer song for everybody and still is. Sorry Barry, but if this song is famous it's because Donna, with her spectacular range of voice, decided to sing it. No contest: DONNA WINS!

Donna Summer's version of this song is spectacular. Comparing them is like apples and oranges; kudos to Barry for astute career moves and all due respect but Donna Summer has the voice, the range and the power enough said!

If having 3 #1 albums, 14 top 10 singles (12 of them million sellers) comprises 15 minutes of fame, I'll have Donna Summer anyday!!

Barry can really be more popular than Donna... I am very sorry for his fans, but I have to say that Donna has a better and stronger voice. Her range is bigger. And she can sing everything, even can turn a dull song like "Could It Be Magic" into a hot number! Donna can sing "Could It Be Magic" and "Copacabana" and sound GREAT, but Barry can't sing "Love To Love You Baby" and "Hot Stuff" without sounding ridiculous.
I got add that here in Brazil Donna is still known but Barry is nobody.
