Cover vs. Original

Stairway to Heaven

Another ballsy, unorthodox cover of one of rock's most treasured songs. Call me crazy, but I prefer Dolly's version. Maybe it's just because I'm a fan, or maybe because I'm tired of hearing the original played to death, but Dolly truly makes it her own. A sign of a successful cover.

Stairway to Heaven has been ear bashed on various Australian Radio Stations and as I have a radio program here in Melbourne I decided to look on the internet for some information on this song by Led Zeppellin and came across one of the best and well known female singing artists Dolly Parton with her version of Stairway to heaven and so I found where I could obtain a copy and played it on Australian Radio and within a few minutes of it going to air the switch board lit up like a Christmas Tree and people wanting to know where to get a copy.
Although Led Zepplelin has been around along time with this song and is in a feild of Heavy Metal and when Dolly Parton came up with her version of the same song as a whole new meaning for this song of Stairway to Heaven and it makes you take more note of the words and meaning of the acual song.
This song will remain on my radio program and I must admit that i am not really a Dolly Parton fan, but after listening to this I am making a few changes in my music line.

The fact that Zeppelins has been played to death and Partons hasnt been played at all shows that their awesome and Parton sucks. Even though Led Zeppelin is my favorite band and this may sound like sacrilege I love Frank zappas live version with the horns gets me almost as much as the original. Look up a hilarious Foo Fighters version on youtube

I don't know if this is the same as the one I am listening to with the Beatles flowing in the background and some Annie Lennox and Pat Benetar and B Boys beats thrown in but if it is the same cover I LOVE it!!!!!!!!! Yes, I love the original, but I think this is one of the best covers that I have heard...what a re-imagining of a great song. I agree, Dolly's voice is right on for the lyrics of Stairway...I would vote for Dolly again and again if I could!

I used to love dolly parton, then i heard her raping of imagine by john lennon, completely turning it into a mockery of the original song, i cant respect anything she does or has done, i vote against her de facto

Any connection between Led Zeppelin and Dolly Parton might seem absurd, but one should consider that they had an early folk and blues sensibility (their version of "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You" is said to be inspired by Page and Plant's love of Joan Baez' 1962 recording of the song -- http://www.moistworks.com/2006/03/you-need-love-muddy-waters-written-by.html -- and they were also fans of such blues artists as Muddy Waters) so it's not such a stretch that one of the defining artists of folk/country would see the beauty in their greatest song. Parton's version, while it doesn't come even close to supplanting the original, has some merit; the lyrics emerge to the forefront moreso in the original (you know, when listening to Zeppelin's recording, we were all just waiting for Page's guitar solo to kick in), but Dolly treats the lyrics as the poetry that they very much are. ("If there's a bustle in hyour hedge row, don't be alarmed now"..what the hell does that mean? Who cares. It's just a very cool line.) I don't blame anyone for not wanting to hear Dolly -- or anyone else -- mess with this masterpiece, but her version isn't quite the joke that many think it is.
