Cover vs. Original

This Woman's Work

God, I love both of these versions. Such a beautiful song. Maxwell does a tremendous job of capturing the essence. Remarkable since he's a male, naturally. His falsetto gives the song a more soulful & seductive sound. But Bush's warmth & tender beauty keeps drawing me in. If I want sleak & sexy though, I'd go with Maxwell.

I have just heard side by side the two versions, and I know that Kate Bush was the creative genius behind the song, but when it comes to the singing, I have to go with Maxwell's version. Even more incredible when you consider that this is a guy singing this song and with such tremendous feeling being transmitted. Nevertheless, the song itself is a perfect song because it really makes you feel for the person in the song.

very hard to choice the better version, both are very unique of it's own... Kate Bush is a very good singer/songwriter, but Maxwell has this own soulsound that makes him very good. I like to give both 100% score....I can't do that, I have voted for Kate

Watch "She's Having a Baby".

KATE WINS HANDS DOWN! Except for Wuthering Heights... *Shudder*

Can't vote, both are excellent. Depends on the mood. I listen to the Maxwell version more often, but enjoy the Kate Bush version just as much if not more when the mood is right.

Wow! I've just heard Maxwells' version of this beautiful song for the first time and it is lovely, no doubt. Kate Bush had the genius in the first place to write and sing this beauty and she will always own the first airing of it. Credit where its due though, both versions are lovely.

It also makes me sad that these days (when people ask me what I'm listening to) when I say Kate Bush they ask me "Who the heck is that?"
I wish they would play her songs on the radio more often.

I personally think the song wasn't meant to sound the way Maxwell made it. Kate Bush makes me cry every time I listen to the song. It was meant for the piano and meant to sound like mourning, not sexy and embracing.

Maxwell does it for me. I have both versions and as much as I agree with whole lot of you on Kate's original been a classic, delivered with much heartfelt emotions, Maxwell one also has its own elements that Kate's didn't bring out. Unfortunately for Maxwell, his will always be known and taken a just a cover version.

To Fernando here, I agree with you when you said that we need to judge Maxwell based on his on songs and the world knows that his music is unique and good. Maxwell in his own right is a geneous.....

Of course the Kate Bush version (if a songwriter singing her own song can be called a version) of this is classic, and beautiful, and what I first heard years ago. But Maxwell entrances me when he sings this song - far from an 'artificial' interpretation for me, and somehow even more impressive when sung so emotively by a person biologically isolated from the subject. Actually, it always brings me close to tears.
